Broken Exhaust Manifold studs on 3.9
Heard a strange noise this morning, opened the hood and the drivers side exhaust manifold shield was laying on the bottom. Picked it up and lord and behold the studs were sheared. Looked with a light and a mirror and the studs are sheared even with the block. Has anyone extracted these? Looks possible to drill and extract with snap on extracter. Not sure if they are long enough to go through manifold. Looks very possible to extract without removing manifold and put a bolt back in it's place instead of stud. If anyone has done this what extractor did you use snap on craftsman ect. and did you go back with original studs or find a better substitute. My snap on extractors are in my tool box at work. I will let you if these will fit. It hasn't started leaking yet but just a matter of time.
I snapped one just the other week. You will have to drill it out, and use an easy out. Just make sure you use the biggest easy out you can get into the bolt. I used one that was too small, and it broke in the hole. Gave up at that point, i never did get it out. Drilling an easy out is all but imposable.
Just broke a #3 extractor. Drilled a beautiful hole with a guide that I made up at work straight down the center with a #25 drill bit. I heard a pop hoping it was the stud moving. Didn't budge.
