Lol the one i bought was for a honda civic, its just a metal pipe with a k&n filter but not heat shield around the filter. Does anybody know if you can just buy one by itself at pepboys or someplace? I have the filter as close to the fender as possible to keep it away from some heat.

 

You can go to Home depot,.. Go to the duct-work-section. They have perfect stainless-
steel pipe split down the side so you can spread it to the shape of your cone type filter.
It has heat shield type material on the backside that works perfect for what you want.
Just design & fab - up your own clamping system to hold it's shape & stay in place to
the pipe. Cheap,.. Works,.. Looks good as store-bought. And, you get to say you made
it yourself.

 

I'll have to try that this weekend as long as I get some time.

 

Or you can just let it go...I forget if I was reading on here or somewhere else but supposedly while hotter air doesn't produce as much power you will get better mpg

Then you read wrong,.. Colder air means denser air.
That means motor runs leaner, (Not richer),.. More
power with less burn,.. Better MPG also.

 

i def didn't read wrong and more dense air would make it run more rich because it would have to add more gas to match up with the more dense air

 

no he was right the first time, colder air causes the pcm to dump more fuel into the mixture due to the IAT. this is why some people who do the IAT mod where you move it onto the airtube so it will read colder air actually end up getting worse mileage. on some trucks the IAT mod doesnt really affect mileage unless it's already cold outside, then the pcm will dump even more fuel into the mixture. And yes, a hotter engine will run cleaner and as long as you're not TRYING to go fast, it will get better mileage because the pcm should be leaned out to the correct A/F mix. The same principle apples to switching to a 180 or colder thermostat. If you're in hot weather it wont really matter that much, but if its already cold outside, it takes longer to warm up and its getting more fuel, which increases performance slightly but loses mileage.

however with all that aside, just putting a heat shield on a run of the mill CAI more than likely wont affect the incomming air temp that much.

 

people make too much out of cai's...they do not make as big of a difference to worry so much about it...the factory setup works just fine and doesnt warrant spending all the time and money on a new one.

i did take out the plastic pipe that goes into the fender and replaced it with a flex hose and ran it out the front and noticed a little power gain...i am getting cold air right thru the grill this way...
