The little horseshoe looking things? Yes, those need to be on or it can come apart.
How come they wouldn't go on? Not the right size? I usually take a set of needle-nosed pliers and push HARD till they clip in.

well, what i would probabally do, if you dont have access to a bench vise, is with a c-clamp and a socket to fit where the u-joint rests in the yoke, and press the caps in, and get the retaining ring in that way.
