Default Butt plug in rear differential?

Hey guys...and girls...
I was shocked to see this rubber butt plug...in the differential where a large metal bolt should be. Should I weld a large nut onto the outside of the differential plate and put in a "real" bolt...the rubber plug was leaking slightly messing up the outside of the differential. Does the differential build up pressure that requires the rubber plug? Would I screw up by welding a large nut over the existing hole and using a nut instead?
Am I a nut?

the diffs have breather tubes on em, and its common for the rubber plugs to bleed a bit, but they do a decent job, so i wouldnt worry about it

Geez, I'll hate to have to wipe the differential periodically to keep it clean.
If I were to soak it in brake cleaner would it seal better? If the breather tube..I think it's on top...was stopped up, would the rubber plug leak more? I don't have a clue what a rear end would cost...but I'll bet it upwards of $500...just want to protect my new...it's new to me...truck! And "if" the plug ever came out during operation, would it sling out all of the gear lube thus destroying the rear end?
Thanks FOx

yeah, a plugged breather will blow out a seal or in our case, will just cause more oil to pass by the plug. they dont come off with ease. it shouldnt be bathing the differential either from the plug.

Are you trying to tell us that you have a rubber butt plug in your rear end?
