Default 4X4 quad cab 5.9

I have the chance to buy a 5.9 4X4 quad cab for $15,000. It is a 2000 yr model, with 64,0000 miles.
The recall has already been done, has alot of options including new 32" BFG MT's and a matching camper top.
The owner states that these are really rare trucks with the 5.9L. Always been garaged, never off-road,
occassional towing. Is this a good price for the truck?

I need a truck that can fit 2 adults, and two little girls (6yo, and a 1 yo.)comfortably, and tow a 4500 pound boat
100 miles about 3 times a summer. Once a year, I will need to fit 3 adults (average size or less) and my two little girls
gear, and the above boat, on an 800 mile one way trip. We make the trip in two days, about 400 miles per day. The rest of the year (
or most of the time) I'll be using the truck around town, and to work (40 mile round trip).
Would this be a good truck for me?

I've been an avid Jeeper and jeep owner for many years, but have always loved the look of the Dakota
especially the 2nd gen 4X4 quads.

Thanks in advance,
Gary

I would go to kbb.com and get the blue book. I went there and loaded it with options in excellent condition and it only gave it a $14,500 value. You know the options better than I do on it, but I think that's too high. As far as room I would say you'd be fine. Towing I don't know, but I would say it would tow that boat. Gas mileage sucks to start with though, so expect to get very poor with towing. I have to fill my tank up about every third day, but I drive twice as much as you would be, and that's with a v-6 getting around 15-16mpg. It sucks thinking I could have a Hemi Ram and get about the same mileage as my v-6.

thanks for the info yellow jacket. I've been looking around 4 a 5.9 4x4 quad and can't find many. My stealership wants 19,000 for a 2001 with 45,000 miles with a 4.7 (which really isn't a slouch either). I would like to have the extra power.

Thanks

What options does it have? For reference, my '00 Q-cab has 66,700 miles, dual exhuast, 5.9, AFE intake, grill guard/winch, topper with rack, 6,000 tow capacity with overloads, plus many other upgrades. The trade in value on mine $13,800 the KBB is resale is about $15K. Something to keep in mind is this. Ask for records all maintainance records, reciepts for mods, service history from the dealer. Have it inspected by a shop, but something to make note of 32's just barely fit on a stock Dakota, ask if the T-bars have been cranked on for clearence. If they have ask who did it. If done by a dealer you should be okay, if done by the owner make sure they had it aligned afterwards.

The 5.9 is not that rare. All Q-cabs had either the 5.9 or 4.7 in '00, the 5.9 is more common than the 4.7. Also, 4x4, part time or AWD? My Dak. has been cross country 4 times, 1,500 miles each way with me, the wife and the Dog with no problems. One thing to know, that 5.9 is not the greatest for mileage, expect 11 to 15 for city mileage, and 13 to 16 for hiway mileage depending on your driving style. Your welcome to check out my gallery for reference of the options I have.

I have a 2003 quad cab and tow a 19' travel about 1,000 miles once a year with no problems at all. Mine is the 4.7 and has all the power I need. Trailer is about 3,500lbs and the truck is rated to tow that and more. It is a bit of a gas hog but I suppose the 5.9 is probably worse.

I have a '04 Quad with the 4.7L and I have towed up to 5000 lbs a couple of times for long trips (ie 1500 miles) without any problems at all. Mileage while towing was usually 11-12. Normal mileage is about 16.
