Default Spark plug heat shields. PITA

Hey all.
Just acquired a 98 Dak V6, 3.9L. Getting lousy gas mileage, so replaced O2 sensor. That got me up to 13.6 mpg. NEXT: went to replace plugs, wires, distrib cap & rotor. mpg pending.
Found the "Heat Shields" to be a royal PITA. Especially the one next to the vacuum booster (left rearmost).
Any suggestions how to remove the shields? Are they necessary?
Thanks.
James

Will the PB blaster effect anything. Do you spray the sleeves with the old plugs in? I like to ask the stupid questions, can you tell

ya keep the plugs in until you those shields off. Otherwise you will get debris in the cylinder.
