Default dilema

ok so i know i've been posting alot of problems but i have inherited a dirty motor....

so tomorrow i will be pulling the oil pan to replace the oil pump/pickup

but i want to pull the valve covers to pour something down through the block to clean most of the crud out....i'm thinking of using diesel....is there anything else....i really don't wanna tear the block down at this point to do a rebuild, after i get my car done i want to do a 318 swap and do it right so i just want it running right now........

what is a good thing to clean out from top to bottom just by draining through??
