Default Help! Help! New rebuilt running rough

I just had a rebuilt motor installed in my 2000 Dakota - It's running really rough at idle but seems to run great past Idle - I took it to dodge to have the computer updated, but it didn't make any difference. Dodge thought maybe it was a timing issue, so I had the engine torn back down to verify that the timing was spot on. Any suggestions would be appreciated. My mechanic thinks the motor just needs to be broke-in. Is this normal?

4.7 V8 Motor

Thanks in advance

is it stock or did you put in more aggressive cams? that would cause a rough idle but smooth in the top end...

also try running a tank of premium with some seafoam in it, that can usually help to smooth out rough idles.

Cheers. Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you could have cat problems or maybe a vacuum leak somewhere. Even a brand new 4.7 that I built for a Durango a few months ago ran smooth even at first start-up. You might also want to make sure all the cam followers are under the cams and haven't popped out which happens sometimes.
