plz read it and give me some suggestions, since there are so many more of you guys than of us im hoping by linking to it from here ill get more input :D

big.bryant 03-11-2009 03:19 PM

idk man, any way you can video it and link us to youtube or something like that? the only thing i can think of is maybe something is rubbing, like the fender well or something along the lines of that

if i were you i would get under there and see what looks out of place, and if there is something wrong with your bushings or joints, etc.

shrpshtr325 03-11-2009 03:25 PM

i dont have a video camera that i can hook up to my computer, but there is nothing rubbing that was my first check, and i still have stock tires so they are not rubbing

magnethead 03-11-2009 04:18 PM

here's my best guess: a bearing. A wasted bearing will go from an ESTIMATED 5000 hz to probably the 9 or 11,000 hz range depending on vehicle speed. If you have locking hubs, that's my first place to check. pinion bearing would be second (but you'd really know if that was it).

shrpshtr325 03-11-2009 04:50 PM

no locking hubs its got the same 4wd set up as the daks i am thinking bearing as well, but my dad is going to do the work for me by the middle of may when i come home from school and he can only hear a VERY narrow range of noises since he works in a machine shop

i willd efiently tell him that is a possibility, any way for me to check that?

mines a 4x2 and I've only even touched real 4x4's...not immmitators.

our camaro had the right front wheel bearing go, and like i said, it was about 5-6 kilohertz at 40 decibels at 30 MPH and would be a deafening 9-11 kilohertz at closer to 60-70 decibels at highway or higher speed.

batman13 03-11-2009 05:16 PM

replace everything

big.bryant 03-11-2009 06:22 PM

it would be quite a bit of money to do EVERYTHING... but for sure looking into the bearing side of things.

shrpshtr325 03-11-2009 06:24 PM

send me the money to replace everything bat :p

lol idk if its there at highway speeds but i would imagine that its there, but also drownd out by the wind noise, i mean it is defiently getting louder since i noticed it on sunday.

my dad does NOT want to believe that its bearings lol but he cant find anything else wrong with it, any ideas on how to check the bearings??

magnethead 03-11-2009 07:17 PM

like i said i've never touched any 4x4 that wasnt a real 4x4.

AFAIK an IFS diff would have 3 bearings, then 1 bearing in each hub flange.

how to isolate driveline components: find a deserted, flat, smooth road. get going to about 45 MPH, then put Tcase AND trans in neutral, shut off the motor, and coast (remmeber- you won't have power brakes or steering!)

If it's still howling, that leaves you with 3 components that are still spinning- front diff, tcase output and drive shafts, and rear diff.

from there, jackstands and a jack are your friends.

GaryC 03-11-2009 09:04 PM

couldn't be the clutch fan locked up ? could it? do you hear it in neutral and rev the engine to say 2500?
You said a whirring noise but,,,,,,,,,,, probably not.

I'd more closely liken the sound of Dodge's radiator cooling methods as jet engine imitations, sound wise....

ccrunner 03-11-2009 10:49 PM

Even with my new exhaust sometimes the fan gets loud enough I can hear it roaring over everything.

it and the transmission winding up are the only ways i know my foot is on the floor...

our hemi sounds like a dang 747 taking off.....

shrpshtr325 03-11-2009 11:29 PM

its NOT the clutch fan, i can still feel and hear that disengage on cold mornings :D

and i would LOVE to take it on a straight road and try that, but we dont have many long straights that are deserted, (im NOT going to do it on a highway) near were i live, so i guess my dads putting it on the jack stands for me and listening to figure out what to replace :D (i go back to school this weekend and want it done before i come home for the summer in may :D )

and thanks for the ideas i have somethings to throw at him (yea he cringed when i said wheel bearing going out on it lol )

shrpshtr325 03-12-2009 01:25 PM

ok so i did what you suggested, put it the trans in nuetral, and shut off the engine coming down my street, the noise is still there so it is DEFINITLY the driveline, (i couldnt get the tcase into nuetral while i was rolling tho)

so does anybody know how to check wheel bearings?????????? w/o replacing them

get the tire off the ground, and shake it in and out. If you can add/remove effective camber just by shaking it (or its wobbly), and the lugs are tight....you got stuff waiting to happen. Also it might have a clankety type sound/feel if you just lightly roll it.

ok thanks ill get on that this weekend

btw i rolled it in the driveway in nuetral w/ the engine off and i was able to hear something rubbing on both sides of the truck and only in the front, not sure what that would be, but assume it would be the wheel bearings going

damn more money that i dont have to spend :'(

if you got your truck to turn into a driveway and stop with the motor off...

kudos to you!

thanks, i got it to start the turn but as i go into my driveway (which is u shaped kinda) i wasnt able to follow it all the waya round i had to stop it (w/o power brakes) halfway in the road and start it again to park, but i KNOW that it is in the drivetrain now

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=4...03068&t=h&z=19

my driveway, i go in the north entrance btw, i made it almost to the point where it starts to double back before i had to stop it and start her up again :)

big.bryant 03-12-2009 04:52 PM

that sucks... i can see the dollar signs accumulating... :(

STFU!!!!!!! :p

lol, not coming out of my pocket, the rents are gonna pay for it :)

shrpshtr325 03-13-2009 02:12 PM

ok well the wheel bearing seem to be ok there is 0 play in the wheel if you grab the top and bottom and try to move it :( would have made my life simple if that were the case, at least id have known what it was

any other ideas or am i just SOL until something finally breaks??
