odd noise any suggestions???
ok so im home for spring break this week and beend riving my truck around ALOT, (its nice to have my wheels again
), but there a noise coming from the front end, best described a "howling"(similar to what tires an aggresive tire would sound like, but ive had the same tires for 1.5 years and this noise is NEW) sound, it is NOT wind noise, i have determined that much, it is variable in volume based on the speed i am traveling at and seeps to be coming from the center of the front end (again i THINK that is the area i cant be ouside the truck to listen for it while im driving ). i checked the universal joins front and rear theyu both seem to be good, the front one has just a tiny bit of rotational play in it, maybe 2 or 3 degrees while in park(but i assume thats withing tolerances) and the rear is nice and tight. I also checked the front axle which seems tight on the passenger side, but the drivers side seems to have some rotational play in it, now i checked all this w/ the D in 2wd so that may be normal for the front end, im not sure so im asking
btw its a 2002 Durango SLT+ w/ 4.7L v8 and 4x4
any help/ ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks alot guys

did not think of that, will check it tomorrow and get back t oyou, my suspicion is that its fine but if not ill correct myself
i was afraid that his would be the answer, are they hard to do myself, you guys know that im fairly mechanically inclined, and so is my father, and if so how much are the parts and how long does it take, and my father wont let me touch anything unless he can PROVE that is what it is, any way for me to do this?

ok differential fluid is fine, filled up to bottom of the hole in the cover right where its supposed to be
, so now i ask, is there any way to check the wheel bearings w/o just replacing them????

You said there was some play in the front driveshaft u-joints? That still turns while the truck is in 2h while driving...Quick test would be to remove the front driveshaft and go for a ride. If the noise is gone then you'll know.If not then the wheel bearings maybe the culprit.
