Dakota Headaches
i would do a solid tune up on it... plugs, filters, oil change, seafoam, and then check it from there... i have the same truck (but with a manual) and i tend to average 15.5-16 or so, combined... then again i am rough on it a lot of the time but yeah... do you ahve any mods to it like exhaust or intake or what?
Did all that (K&N filter, new plugs, oil change). The truck was sitting for about a year and when I brought it out of retirement, I went through it and checked every thing. Don't know if sitting idle could have anything to do with the OD not working and the rearend noise. Hey, I don't drive like grandma. I drive with my foot through the firewall alot of the time, but even when I baby it just to see what I can get, it still sux.
Was hoping it was something simple. I like working on my cars, besides things are kinda tight and I don't have the money to throw at it right now. That's why I was asking for some advise from anyone that might have had this OD problem on thier Dakota. Was wanting it to be something simple like electrical not internal in the trans.
The rearend I have decided that I will probably pick up a low milage unit from the junk yard and hope for the best.

Thanks for the advise. I'll check the u-joints again. Just didn't think they would make that much noise. It is a whinning noise, but when I checked it again, it seems to have a skip when rotating the left side wheel. Doesn't make noise, just like it skips a tooth in one spot. And it is hard to turn the wheel - truck in neutral, jacked up. I know it won't spin freely, but it seems to take more effort than I would expect to rotate the wheels.
Any ideas from anyone on the over-drive problem? Anyone? Anyone?
