you would probably have to ditch the EFI and go carb and figure out the wiring for your gauges. other then that, it shouldnt be that hard. I know there are kits to mount the 727 on the dakota with. you'd probably need a custom driveshaft, but other then that... its not impossible or anything.

 

It should function properly, except one minor issue...

Your transmission has an electronically controlled governor and electronically controlled overdrive in it, whereas the 727 has a hydraulically controlled governor and no overdrive. Like I said, it will function like it should, but the check engine will throw the codes related to the governor and overdrive units. Basically, the computer will be left to run the motor. I did a transmission swap in my truck going from a 46rh auto to an NV3500 manual, and the computer works fine for running the engine, but threw 3 different transmission codes. If you live in a state that does not require inspection, you'll be fine, but your truck won't pass inspection in an inspection state with so many check engine codes thrown.

Also, like stated above, you'll probably need a custom driveshaft made, cause the 727 would be shorter since it doesn't have the overdrive unit bolted to the back.

 

why not do what User did? Upgrade the 46RE to basically act as a 727 when the overdrive is off?
