I have never done a fluid change and I think it will be easy lol. I just don't know how much fluid to buy. Any help would be nice. I am also thinking of going with royal purple. It says I have the anti-spin differential, does that mean i need the friction additive?

 

What to get is up to you. I use Lucas Oil Stabilzer... the same stuff that you can use 20% in your engine... its says you can use 100% in a differential. I like it cause it doesn't smell like typical gear oil (worst smell there ever was), and it has worked great for me so far... kept the differential fairly cool and very quiet.

You'll need to buy 3 quarts, but you will only use about 2.25-2.5 . Basically park the truck on a level surface and fill it up til its at the bottom of the fill hole. You can't overfill it unless you have the back of the truck up higher than the front.

Yes, you will need the friction additive.

And to add one more thing, don't waste your money on the preformed gasket for the diff cover, buy high temp RTV silicone and use it.

For what? Autozone, Advance Auto, Car Quest, NAPA, etc. should have everything you'll need. I got my fluid, friction additive, HT RTV gasket maker and brake cleaner to do the job at Autozone (although I try to avoid their actual parts).

 

Yep just changed my diff fluid last night. I used about 2 1/2 quarts of mobil 1 75W 90 synthetic gear lube. I have the LSD diff too so i had to buy the additive for $17.00 at the dealership. just put a bead of black rtv sealant around the diff cover and fill it up to the bottom of the fill hole and your done! it was about $50 total with the lube, additive, and rtv sealant. Good luck

 

$17.00!!!! Autozone sells friction additive for less than $6. If there is one near you, go there...

im going to be doing this soon also, and i was wondering if it would just be easier to buy a gasket for the differential cover. It cant be very expensive. or does the RTV stuff seal better?

 

LOL! You got me to look it up and... I was wrong. The preformed gasket is cheaper than a tube of Black HT RTV. But, you are only going to use a thin bead of RTV, and you won't even use a 1/4 of the tube, so in the long run if you're the kind of DIYer that does work that requires a lot of gaskets, the RTV pays for itself 2-3 times over in the end.

 

I've never had an LSD chatter when not running friction modifier. Synthetic oil usually already has it and after a few years most LSDs are worn out anyways so if anything lack of friction modifier will help it hook up a little better.

I've always used straight RTV on the cover, even on the 8.8 in my B2 after I re-geared it and the master install kit came with the gasket, I chose not to use it.
