Default Blowing off steam dam Dakota 4.7

OK i need to say this: i have been working on cars and heavy equipment for 10 years.
Whoever designed the Dodge Dakota 4.7 can kiss my as$ I mean come on 3 yes three timing chains why why. along with the freaking three chains there are 3 yes three tensioners, and 2 chain guides. THAT IS WAY TO MUCH MOVING PARTS TO DO SOMETHING SO BASIC IN ENGINE OPERATION. I wish the auto designers would STOP trying to reinvent the wheel...

A friend of mine is a mechanic at the local dodge stealership he has no other reason for it other then better fuel economy... what the heck. 2 cam shafts 2 dam cam shaft timing chains that need to be timed just so. All is better then 1 cam shaft 12 push rods and 12 rockers never thought about how much a push rod weighs let alone a massive rocker arm.

Although my friend did show me a very easy way to get around removing any of it when removing the heads. a handy tool he made out of a coat hanger with this you can depress the tensioners for the dam over head cam chains :-). so things are not as bad as they seem was really not that bad of a job.

Thanks just need to get that out to some one that may understand. Don't get me wrong i can fix anything along with the Dodge Dakota 4.7 with a cracked head.

haha, i normally get pissed off when people come on here just to b!tch about something, but i know how you feel. the 3.9/5.2/5.9 was a much simpler design, with its roots as far back as the 1950's, but times changed and dodge had to complicate things in order to get a couple extra mpg. dont get me wrong, the 4.7 is a good engine, but im glad i dont have one.

a guy like me who knows more than the average person about a car engine, but is definately no mechanic, can change a head on a 3.9. it would probably take me a long time, but i could do it. someday i would like to get a new ram with a hemi, but hate the thought of ever having to touch that engine. my grandpa bought the truck i have now, and he couldve opted for the 4.7 and thought about it for a while. but he was one of those old guys who had been working on old mopar pushrod engines since the 60s and felt more comfortable with the 3.9 because he'd owned multiple dakotas with 318's and 3.9's before. sometimes i wish he wouldve bought an R/T, but a 75 year old man with a short temper who cant hear shouldnt be driving a dakota R/T.

Its not that i was b!tching at least i did not wont it to come out that way. but i guess i way

I am vary glad i drive a dodge ram i think if i was to buy the Dakota i would have to get it with the 3.9, About the same power and reliability as the 4.7.

Not that the 5.9 magnum is all that better in the way of problems

Your grandpa sounds like every grumpy short temper mechanic that thought me everything i know about working on cars and fixing what is broken. "if you are going to do something do it right or do not do it all". god that rings throw my head every time i start to work on anything.

Im sorry but coming from a person who has owned both a 3.9 and 4.7, the 3.9 does not even compare in either catagory. I know there are some people that will go to the grave with their 3.9 saying how realiable it is, but maybe just because they need something good to say about their truck. But I had a terrible time with, and so have many of my friends. It was very unrealiable and about the same power? I don't even need to comment on that.

I have done quite a few head gaskets on the 4.7 motors and don't find the timing chain setup complicated at all. Realistically it is a very nice setup and simple.
