Fluid Capacities

Got this list from the dealer of all the fluid capacities for a 2000 Dodge Dakota, but it includes All engines Except the 5.2L, transmissions and both rear ends. Maybe someone can sticky this or put it in the DYI section. Just thought I'd type it up for everyone as there are frequent questions concerning capacities.

Capacities are in Pints, quarts, or gallons. If listed in Pints, I've added the measurement in quarts as well.

Fuel Tank

Standard : 15 Gal.
Optional : 22 Gal.

Engine Oil With Filter Change

2.5L : 4.5 qts.
3.9L : 4.5 qts.
4.7L : 6.0 qts.
5.9L : 5.0 qts
(5.2L is most likely 5.0 qts. as well)

Cooling System

2.5L : 9.8 qts. (2.45 Gallons)
3.9L : 14.0 qts. (3.5 Gallons)
4.7L : 17.0 qts. (4.25 Gallons)
5.9L : 14.3 qts. (3.575 Gallons)
(5.2L Is most likely close to 14.3 qts)

Automatic Transmission
(Dry Fill Capacity - Depending on type and size of internal cooler, length, inside diameter of cooler lines or use of auxiliary cooler, these figures may vary.)

42RE : 19-20 Pints (9.5-10 Qts.)
45RFE : 28 Pints (14 Qts)
46RE : 19-20 Pints (9.5-10 Qts)

Manual Transmission

NV3500 : 4.2 Pints (2.1 Qts)
AX15 : 6.6 Pints (3.3 Qts.)
NV1500HD : 4.7 Pints (2.35 Qts)*

*Include .22 Pints for Friction Modifier

Transfer Case

NP231 : 2.5 Pints (1.25 Qts.)
NP231-HD : 2.5 Pints (1.25 Qts.)
NP242 : 2.5 Pints (1.25 Qts)

Front Axle

Model 194 : 3.0 pints (1.5 Qts.)

Rear Axle

8.25" : 4.4 Pints (2.2 Qts.)
9.25" : 4.8 Pints (2.4 Qts.)

Power Steering

Power Steering fluid capacities are dependent on engine/chassis options as well as steer gear/cooler options. Depending on type and side of internal cooler, length and inside diameter of cooler lines, or use of auxiliary cooler, these capacities may vary.

I just got done draining the trans pan and putting a new gasket on my Dodge Dakota 2000 SLT 3.9L, and it took me 6 Quarts to fill it, everywhere I looked it said it should only take like 4.5 quarts, it is not leaking and it has been running fine, my ? is, Why did it take so many Quarts? anyone!

you may have a deep pan. The stock pan is only like 1.5" deep, deeper pans do exist.

The pan I got is like 3" or so, We did buy it off the car lot. back in 2000.

The fuel tank sizes are true for the 4-cylinder and 6 cylinder (respectively). But my 4.7 has a 24 gallon tank and I'm pretty sure all the V8s had 24 gallon tanks.

thanks for this reference post. Excellent info.

Some can vary. I just did full tranny service with converter. (98 RT) Put 10 quarts in and it wouldn't register on stick. Took another 3! So this one most have a deeper pan or something with the cooler.

No 3.7L. Is the 3.9 the close to the 3.7?
