Default Rear end quetion

I have a 98 extended cab dakota with the 5.2. The truck caught on fire and the front end burned. I have found a 2000 dakota 4 door 4x4 with the 5.9 in it. One of the back axles is out and the tire fell off. I can purchase the truck broken for $2,500. Would the rear ends swap. The guy says he thinks it has 3.73 gears. If I remember right the 98 has 3.55 gears. Any help will be apprecitated.

On a 4x4 the gears MUST match, so you need to make sure before you go through with it. It sounds like a good deal to me though. It shouldn't be too hard at all to make your rear axle work in the new truck even if you have to swap inner parts. Just make sure they are the same axle... Dodge used both the 8.25" and 9.25" in the 2nd gen Dakotas (8.25 has 10 bolt cover, 9.25 has 12 bolt cover).
