Cool 99 Dakota Transfer Case

I got a 99 dakota 4x4 sport. 3.9L v6 .
231D Transfer case chain rattles bad and 4 wheel jumps and makes bad noises.
I was looking on craigs list and found a 99 231 D TCase from a Durango with a small v8 in it. Is that case the exact same one as mine? I got a v6.

It should be the same. Just the output may be different. Double check on it at http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata...ge.html#Dakota

You could just replace the chain.

I took out the TCase yesterday. It appears it has been open before. There is permatex gasket maker on it. The shafts appear to be tight. I don't think the bearings are bad. I took it apart and the chain is extremely loose. The chain is 1 1/2 " wide. the sprokets are about 1 1/4" wide. The teeth are about 1/4" deep. I am not sure if that is really worn or not. It doesn't look it. I did not see metal in the oil. I think this chain is the HD chain. So far hear is my questions. 1) If the case tag does not say HD - Is that the correct chain? Should I buy the 1 inch, and are the same sprokets used for both types of chains. 2) The pad on the shift fork is more than worn, it is broken off. Can you just buy that pad, or do I need to rebuild that whole rebuild kit? 3)ebay has chains from Drivetrain Parts for 98.00. Is that a good deal.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NP-23...item5ad202eab3

I think the clunking noise is the front differential. After I took the front shaft off I played with the TCase and it seemed tight. I played with the yoke on the front and I could make noise up there. I guess the front end will be next.

I whent to get the gaskets and shift fork pads today. It appears the case is the NP 231 HD. This case was placed in the Dakotas with the V8 motor. Some one apparently changed out the case on this vehicle previously. They only make 1 of the 3 gaskets. the rear bearing housing has the only gasket($40). Use Permatex on the other 2. The shift fork pads are under $3 a set. You'll need 2 sets. The oil filter is $10. The rear driveshaft seal was $30. Chain is $225 at dealer(Forget that) Ebay $98. Total parts about $200.
