dakota: average flaws or a purchase mistake?
Have a 98 with 70K on it. It's not one of the quietest vehicles I've ever owned. Seems to me cars today have more engine noise then earlier power plants. As far as the rear....I think they suck in a dodge...mine always has a whine at around 45mph. I do love the ride....it's just as comfortable or better then a car.
If you ask me, it was definately a mistake. I have a '94 and an '04. The only thing I ever replaced in the '94 was the radiator 4 years ago and it now has 151,000 miles on it. On the other hand, I bought my '04 in Sept. and went through 2 power steering pumps with in the first thousand miles, after the dealer repeatedly told me that there was nothing wrong with it, except for the OBNOCTIOUS squeeling noise every time you turned the wheel. I then had a computer problem (and still do) where the transmission shifts into overdrive at 25-30mph and "grinds", which was supposedly fixed with new software, but it somehow still happens. Just today I noticed rear axle fluid leaking out of the rear, which I was told is normal by a service tech outside of Dodge because it is a cheap rubber cap used for checking the level. I get horrible gas mileage (14mpg), where my '94 gets 17mpg, and have horrible service at my dealership to the point where they left the windows down during a heavy rainstorm and then tried to get me to drive it home that way. So what do you think....average flaws or a bad buy for me? Not to mention that I am now at 10200 miles and the brakes are toast. (4 wheel disc)

Man sounds to me like you have some crappy dealers by you. Do some research before you service your truck at a dealer next time. Look for and accept nothing less than five (5) stars. It truly makes a difference. They tend to go the distance for the customer whatever the issue maybe. I was out of state when my valve control body went on my tranny. The dealership told me that I could have a free rental car for as long as I needed it. I did have the free loaner car on my warranty but I never told them that and they found that out after I had the truck serviced and was gone. Anyways, I also learned that the call I made to Dodge itself helped me out too. I figured I would give them a piece of my mind about the issue I was having on my brand new truck and they took the problem into their hands. If you ever have a problem with the dealership, call Dodge themselves. They hate to hear about bad things happening at their dealers. It worked for me and I will always keep this in mind. Their number is on their website I think its under the owners section. Good Luck.
I did call dodge, four times to be exact, and not one rep pointed me into a positive direction except for the last one who started a "file" for me that had to be forwarded to the service manager, Gm, etc. every time a new issue had arrisen. I bought the truck from Savage L&B Dodge in Robesonia, PA and it is a five star dealership. I can't wait to get rid of this truck and chrysler in August after court.
I have a 01 4WD Quad Cab Sport 4.7L. I bought it used from a dealer in town that we have bought all of our cars from. It had 37,000 miles on it when I took delivery. I must say that for a truck it is pretty quiet on the highway , atleast I think so , and I have owned 3 truck before this. Mileage is a concern , however I do not travel very far , I get about 450 miles to a full tank of gas with the 24 gallon tank and the tailgate up
. Knock on wood I have not had any issues yet. That 4.7l sure is a monster. I can just image what the 5.9 lilter is. I pull a 16' landscape trailer electric brakes and all and it does just fine. Sounds like you might have gotten a bad one , or could it be issues with the 04 model year ?? Good Luck

I am sorry that you are having problems...I have been very lucky so far, with the exception of the brakes basically gone at 12K. The gas mileage is horrible with me averaging about 15 with all interstate driving. Good Luck!!!!
I have a 2000 with the 3.9L driven like a hot rod everyday and I make LOTS and Lots of 1000 mile round trips up and down the Tx highways going back and forth to home. Problems so far : clutch fan, tension pulley, and last but not least my freakin A/c just went out.[:@] with 80,000 hard miles on her.
we got our '01 in Jan. ran like a charm when we first bought it. quiet as can be. we got the 3.9 w/ the 5spd. we knew we lacked the power but was satisfied w/ everything else. about a week later the dreadful ticking was becoming noticable. tried changing the oil and adding SEA Foam. help alittle but it came back. had the upper balljoints fixed last week. don't know about the other two recalls. was considering buying a durango for my wife so i can have the truck, but seems like dodge certainly has some flaws to deal with. I know i'll be stuck w/ the dodge while my wife is driving a Ch!$#%@!%#^.
