Angry 02 ABS issue

I've got an '02 that has a braking issue. When I'm driving down the road and someone pulls out in front of me or slows down suddenly, I hit the brakes and they grab but release with only about 1/4 of the stopping strength. I don't hear the wheels locking up when this happens. Under "normal" conditions they give no problems.

I've had a few close calls lately where this has happened. I'm unsure if it is an ABS circuit issue or if it is in the brake values.

Has anyone else had this issue and gotten it corrected? I don't know enough about the ABS system to start looking around under the hood.
I don't want to take it to a dealer and have them charge me an arm and leg without fixing the issue.

Thanks

is the ABS dash light on? try checking the computer codes on your odometer.

no, the abs light is not constantly on while driving. it only comes on at the inital startup. there are no codes either.

Same here. I have had the truck for only 2 months but this does not seem normal. I have had abs equipped vehicles before and have never experienced this behavior.
