NV4500 swap?
Can anyone point me towards some info on this. So far all I have found is that it requires a body lift (which I have) and is about 100lb heavier. Other than that, any out of a gas dodge will work. Can the cross member hold up to the weight? How about matching up a transfer case?

Here are 2 posts from the 1st Gen. Both frames/ body's are very close to the same. And use the same engine/ transmission styles.

Transfer case should bolt up. I think the biggest obstacle is making it fit the tunnel.

So the NV4500 bolts up to a 318 and a cummin5.9 or is there alot of modification? my transmission is currently a auto but want to swap. also will it fit under a two wheel drive without a lift, because my plan is actually to drop mine about two inches.

Keep in mind the NV4500 is not really a "sport" transmission. It's more like a wide-ratio 4 speed with a granny-low gear added on.
It's designed for big trucks and heavy loads. My work truck is a 2500 Ram with the 5.9 gasser and NV4500, with 4.10 gears. It sounds like it would be quick for a truck, but it's really not. You'll wind out 1st gear at about 14 MPH, take a huge RPM drop into 2nd, climb out of that hole, shift at 40 or 45 MPH with the engine wailing, take another big drop into 3rd, and so on. It's tough to be smooth, and not really possible to be fast. It would make a good 4x4 crawler transmission, as it's almost impossile to stall in 1st gear. But for a lowered sport truck, it's not really set up right. A 5 speed NV3500 or 6 speed Getrag 238 from the new Dakotas is much better suited. |
I have the NV3500 and it is about as clumsy as you said the NV4500 is. I want the nv4500 for the granny gear and durability. I loves me some offroad fun and towing.

Oh nice, well then go for it. The low 1st is great for real truck stuff.

Also, no, you can bolt it to a 5.9 magnum and a 318 with the gasser bellhousing, you cannot bolt that same bellhousing to a cummins diesel. |
