hello, im usually over on the 2nd gen ram side but i need some advise from you guys, my dad has a 2001, v6, reg cab, 6.5 bed, 4x4 dakota and when ever you make a hard left or right turn it makes a weird grinding sound, it sounds like a brake shoe grinding on the drum. like shheeeet......shheeeet........sheeet. i know a machanic that has worked at the dodge dealer here for 25-30 yrs and hes stumped, there are no signes of wear or tear anywere changed the fluid, bearings, all the drum break components, even shocks! its more of a nusense than a problem and my dad says itll fall off and then he'll know but it would be nice to know

 

My two guesses are something with the power steering pump or box, or a cv axle on its way out.

 

Hmmm...Mine was doing the same thing whenever I turned...got a grinding noise like something was rubbing. Just like you descibed...sheet...sheet....sheet.

Turned out it was a metal cover on the back side of the rotor that was rubbin on the drivers side. Just climbed under the truck and bent it back by hand. I had just had the whole front end rebuilt, so my guess was the mechanic accidently bent it during the repair job.

 

ok so this is even weirder, i put it in 4x4 and went down about 5 miles of icey roads and now it doesnt do it anymore, is that normal?

 

Sounds like something isn't right. problems verry rarely ever fix themselves. Jack it up start moving stuff around till you find something.

 

I have heard a noise like this before and it could be the dust plate for the brakes rubbing on the rotor or I have had a wheel cover flex and it made that noise flexing on the rim.the fix for that was we put a thin film of grease on the wheel cover prongs.

 

i fixed it, there was a stick stuck jambed in the frnt caliper and was hitting the wheel, all this time i was looking in the rear end, thanks for all your help! i knew it was somthing stupid like that
