Would you happen to be rolling forward when it grinds. If that is true thats more or less normal

Depends on which transmission you have! If you have the ax-15, reverse is not synchronized, so grinding will be normal. If you have the nv1500 or nv3500, reverse is synchronized, so grinding it not normal.

My nv3500 has never grinded going into any gear!

That happened to me before but it started out with what felt like the was transmission slipping. But after taking it to a specialist I found out I found out that I was driving around with no 2nd gear. This eventually led to more slippage and grinding in reverse. I had to get a new 44re tranny.

The 44re is an auto, the OP has a standard!
