Check your power steering pump...Sounds like it isnt pumping. Does it *whine* when you steer? Does it have fluid in it?

You could try to flush it and fill it up again. Which would be cheaper then getting a new pump. Just follow the proper procedures to purge it if you do.

If you do get a new pump, get the reservoir with it.
I gave up trying to get the pump out of the reservoir, its in there good.

I had the exact same problem about a month ago. I talked to a mechanic who is pretty familiar with dakotas about it. He drained my powersteering fluid and flushed the lines, then he replaced it with transmission fluid. The transmission fluid is thinner. I have not had a single problem since. I would try this before replacing the pump. Best of luck to ya!
