Default Slipping 2 & 3 Gears-Plz Help Me W/ order of Steps To Take

2000 Dakota Sport/V6 Auto w/ 150K
My first post, so please be easy on the newb. Great forum here. I am pretty strapped for cash at the moment and am having slippage when I first start up in the morning. It gets better as it drives, but I am freaked out that it could turn for the worse. I've done a lot of searching around, but all of the diff info can get confusing and overwhelming. What I'm wondering is what steps should I take to identify and/or take care of this. I've been told that very commonly a trans shop will usually always tell you that your trans needs replaced. I guess I'm just looking for a few possibilities of what it can be and perhaps a checklist or a list of steps to take as I narrow the problem down. BTW, the fluid level is fine, it doesn't smell burnt or bad, and it looks ok. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I didn't know if I should have posted this in the main board, or the 2nd gen Dak board sub-forum. Not sure if I should delete (or if I even can delete) this post and repost in the subforum, or if this can be moved?

Thx dude, and I agree w/ you sig btw.

So, anyone able to help a brother out with my questions? Is it possible that the slip can be "lived with" and that it won't get worse, continuing to function with just some initial slippage after starting? I guess that's just a follow-up question, because I am really interested in hearing answers to my initial questions and to hear some "narrowing down" steps to see where I'm at with this truck. Thx.

it'll continue to slip until it eventually quits all together. so start saving some cash now and you'll have enough for a rebuild when the time comes.
theres no way of knowing when it will die, so take it easy on her.

if its only slipping initially make sure u give it plenty of warm up time...its never good to just start any vehicle and take off, esp. not one with a tranny as touchy as the dakotas. If its only doin it when its cold get a filter kit and change the fluid in the tranny. Messy job but might be all it needs
