Put all new ball joints, tie rod ends, and sway bar linkages on it about two weeks ago. There is some play in what seems to be the steering wheel itself. Kinda clicks when I rock the wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock position.
Being that the air bag is in the steering wheel I'm a bit hessitant to dig into it. can't I get to the nut safely without risking the air bag going off?

Yes you can get the nut off without activating the air bag. You should pull the Air Bag fuse to be certain it will not set off. If you need a brake down of the steering wheel check out the stickies at the top of this section for the service manual.
