anything synchromesh the book says mopar manual transmission fluid but pennzoil or gm synchromesh is the same thing as is any of the synchro things from rp, amsoil, redline ect they usually have stupid names tho
I haven't been able to change it yet, work has been shafting me with extra hours, can't complain in this economy. Before I change some of my tranny fluid, would anybody suggest a complete flush? I heard they can destroy/hurt your transmission. Also, because I don't know if the previous owner ever did a fluid change would just draining what I can and re-filling cause any problems because of the two different fluids? As-in - Whatever is in their and Pennzoil syncromesh?

Let me get this straight in this method, you pretty much drain it twice to try and clean it out of the old fluid the best you can before you add better one?
I drain it put in cheap (of course approved) SYNTHETIC tran. fluid. Check, for leaks drive that around the block using all the gears and re-drain, re-fill and use the new syncromesh fluids.
so it's alright for some of the old fluid to be inside the tranny because even the quick change of the cheap synthetic fluid won't get all the old fluids out
There's no need to fool around with a flush, drain it warm, refill, be happy.
DON'T use gear oil, it'll destroy an NV3500, stick to syncrhomesh, syncrhomesh is synthetic.
I prefer to fill mine by removing the shifter, this also allows me to overfill it as well.
When you mean clutch engaged, as in clutch pedal NOT depressed? If so the noise sounds like the input bearing, most older trannys have some input bearing noise, mine has a little, the tranny in my dads ranger has always had some since he's had it, it's louder than my Dakota but it hasn't gotten any worse in 80,000 miles, unless it's stupid loud, I wouldn't worry about it..

Drive it around, go through all the gears and drain and re-fill with Synchromesh, this should be all you need to do. The inside of the transmission is not like the internals of an engine. There is no need to drain twice to remove any sludge or anything. You might see some fine metal particles that look like sand in the old fluid or stuck to the drain plug, these are normal. It's from normal wear on the internals. Just drain and refill it about every 48,000 miles and don't worry about it unless it makes really bad or loud noises like Hahns said.
