Can o Worms
Well I'd put off some touch up work on my Dak Quad cab along the lower body pinch welds until today. Needless to say I was sorely disappointed at what I found when I got started. Passenger side, not too bad just some surface rust under the flaking paint below the quarter window at the pinch weld. No biggy, a little sanding and some rust encapsulator, ready for primer and paint. The driver side on the other hand was a little worse. The outer body flange was ate up at the pinch weld, but only about 2" long. But upon further digging it was rusted on up into the cab an additional 3". About 3 hours of patch panel fabricating and welding later and she's all solid again. There is some kind of body sealer material that the factory used right where the rust was and there was enough of it in there that it was blocking the body drain below it and causing moisture to collect. Not good. Any how I'll wait for the rust encapsulator to dry overnight and prime and paint tomorrow.
Now a question about bumper rust. Mine's an SLT with the chrome bumpers. The rear bumper has rust that started at the ball hitch hole and is getting worse. Enough so that the chrome is delaminating and starting to look like crap. Does anyone have experience with this and what did you do to fix it besides replacing the bumper? I'm thinking of grinding away the chrome in the recessed area there and painting it with some bed liner. Suggestions?

Well...
I too have the chrome. Mine was rusting as well, exactly as yours is. Every time it would rain, I would get a rust-colored halo emanating onto the chrome from the hole where the ball goes. Then, after the halo effect had been occurring for a summer, my chrome started to flake. Then, I was stopped at a red light, and a lady in a Focus hit me doing 50. On a sunny day on dry pavement. Her car had new tires on (this was actually the excuse she gave the cop, who apparently didn't buy it as he wrote her a failure to yield ticket).
Fast-forward a couple of days and the whole backside of my truck is new and shiny. Looks pretty good. The other day I was out cleaning it up a bit, and what did I see???
Damn rust halo emanating form the hole where the ball goes in the bumper
So, I would say even fixing it won't cure the problem.
Moral of the story? Whatever you decide to do will likely produce results at least as good as getting a new bumper.
