98 dakota slt radio
hey guys im new here, i been tackling this job for hours and cant seem to get'er done. So im trying to install a alpine cd player in my truck and i got the wiring harness for it at walmart but cant seem to get the amp to turn on. is it that my harness is wrong? alpine powers up but speakers dont play so amp is off right... any help is much appreciated.
There should be a blue wire with a white stripe on the harness from Walmart. The wire can also be solid blue but it still has the same function, to turn on the factory amplifier. Connect the blue/white wire from the Alpine and the amp should trigger and you should have sound. If not, check the Walmart harness and be sure the blue or blue/white wire connects to the correct pin on the factory radio harness. The wire it should connect to in the factory harness is dark green with either a red or orange stripe. A few times in the past I have seen the aftermarket radio harnesses have the wire moved over to one side or the other of the pin where it should connect in the factory radio harness.
If that's not it and you still have no sound, check the fuse and be sure the amp still has power. Check for speaker wires shorted to ground, that will mute the output from the Alpine head unit.

There is nothing to hook the remote turn on lead up to in the factory harness. You need to run a wire directly from the back of the Alpine head unit remote power on lead to the amplifier's remote power on terminal.
Just a little more info...
Your head unit should have a blue/white wire for the remote turn on lead. I have never seen a radio with a different color lead. It may be labeled "remote on," "amp on," or even "power antenna."
This wire allows your head unit to act as an "on/off" switch. When the radio is on, it is energized. When the radio is off, it is dead. It is the same lead that is used to power a power antenna. Radio on, antenna up. Radio off, antenna down.
There is a switch in the amp. When the radio is off, the amp is off as well. Turn on the radio, voltage flows to the amp, turning the amp on. So, absent a switched power supply being hooked up to the amp, there is no way for it to turn on.
I have seen RCA cable that have the remote lead incorporated into the cables. Personally, I would not use that option because you generally want your power wires and your RCA wires away from each other.
