it is a 2000 Dodge Dakota Sport 4x4 Ext. Cab, 4.7V8, 31" tires, the whole works. Bought it coming in with high expectations (since it was a dodge), but I have had nothing but problems with it. Whether you buy it new or used, you shouldn't have this many and these types of problems with ONLY 44,500 miles on it. I had the entire rack & pinion replaced, upper ball joints (thank GOD for the recall). Ever since they replaced the ball joints, I've had to get 2 new left tie rods installed. The second time it was warranty, but the problem still continues. Severe squeaking, and it IS coming from the same spot as it was in the beginning. Its because they don't make greaseable parts from Mopar anymore, so if I had to get greased, I would have to replace the ball joints and tie rods, and I honestly don't want to and shouldn't with this amount of miles! If you want to hear me "bitch" about it, read the post under "2nd Generation" and under "TIE ROD". You'll get more info and I don't want to type it anymore.
Oh, RcBandit, I like that you have the kid pissin on Ford, not any of the GM logos. Like I've said, I was going to buy a 2001 Chevy Silverado (Reg cab, short box, step side), but decided that the Dakota would work just fine. But I have had nothing but problems. And I want to take it to the Dodge dealer, but the guy said that they will charge me for the labor even if they find out it is the new ball joints already going bad. ALSO, going 45mph, my truck feels like its shaking, and mainly when I'm on the gas, as soon as I take my foot off the pedal, it stops. So my tranny is ****ed up. I'VE ONLY PUT 2,500 MILES ON IT SINCE I GOT IT. Quite frankly, this is the worst vehicle I've ever owned. Sorry guys.
My bro just recently bought a 99 Chevy Silverado, ext cab, etc. 42,000 miles and in excellent condition. No problems and he's had it for about 3 months (shortly after I bought my Dodge, thinking I would have a better truck, MAYBE). My dad has a 99 GMC Suburban with 165,000 miles and hardly any problems (but the obvious, brakes, etc.). My Grandpa has a 2004 GMC Sierra, but trades every 5 years or so cuz he wants a newer one (he has plenty of money, thats why he buys all the time) and he's NEVER had a problem. My other grandpa owns a masonry business and all their trucks are GMC Sierras 1500's and no problems at all. Mom has a 2004 Chevy Impala. She recently traded in her 2000 for a newer one and only had a problem in the wheel that was under warranty (2000 model), and no problems since. Aunt & Uncle have a 2004 Chevy Suburban Z71 and LOVE it. They had a 99 GMC Suburban like my dads and got rid of it for something newer, they also had about 130,000 once they got rid of it. They had to replace a fuel pump at 120,000 miles (I helped him install the new pump). My last vehicle was a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am (my 16 year old bro has it now). I got rid of it only because I wanted a truck, otherwise I would have kept it. Only problem was corrosion on the battery.
Very few of my friends have Dodges anymore. One of my friends had a 98 Ram but had some terrible tranny problems (and yes, i know those were known for that, but still). The ONLY person that I know that has a Dodge is my friend who has a 2004 Dodge Ram Quad Cab with the Hemi. Totally loaded $37,000 truck.
So as I see it, GM isn't the "dark side". They say that have the "longest lasting trucks on the road" and I can definetly see why.
I don't want to go to an import, but I may even see what Toyota has to offer. I absolutely HATE Ford so I won't go there. I did a custom build on both a new GMC Sierra and a Chevy Silverado (same basic truck) and I can get one for $300 a month (a little more or a little less depending...) while I'm paying $250 for a used Dodge that I don't even feel safe driving.
I'm supposed to drive 2 hours to take my bro to a hockey tourny, but I'm not taking my Dodge with 44,000 miles. I'm taking my dads 99 Suburban with 165,000 and I'll feel safe.
Now, does any body want to buy this thing?

p.s. Can you tell I'm pissed off and fed up?? lol

Any GOOD Dealer would not charge you for the labor if the 2nd set of ball joints are already faulty. It is possible to lube them, however, you have to buy a tool that will poke a small pin hole in the rubber boot. I've had 4 Dodges in my life, I have a 97 Ram w/ 90,000 miles I haven't had any what I would call Major problems, a 95 Dodge Conversion Van that hasn't caused me any problems a 10 yr old vehicle wouldn't cause, a 99 Ram (which I've gotten rid of) I bought it used w/75,000 miles and had a bunch of problems w/it in the 9 months I owned it, and now my '03 Ram HEMI which hasn't caused me any major problems either, except I've had brakes done on it already because of rotors warping. I'm a satisfied Dodge owner, I don't believe the grass is greener on the "other side," I've heard just as many horror stories about Ford and GM, any vehicle you own will cause you problems, goodluck w/your Canyon/Colorado or Silverado!
well, I just got back from my bros hockey tourny. BUT, before I left I had talked to my dad about my whole truck situation and he knows a few of the guys down at the dodge dealer. I guess the guy I talked to was one of those "********". Meaning its that ONE guy in the dealership that really is always in a pissed off mood, doesn't like to hear about the dodge having problems, especially after they installed a new set of upperball joints.
Anyway, I took my dads truck and it was excellent. I heard from my dad this morning (saturday) and they dropped off the truck. The only downside at the moment is that the guy who dropped it off was a salesman that my dad is friends with and he didn't know what they did with the truck. But I guess they couldn't get it to squeak or that they fixed it and it doesn't squeak anymore, I don't know yet, I haven't drove it since I got home. But the first thing I'm gonna do is go drive it in a little while and go over some decent size bumps and stuff while turning left and we'll see.
RC, I already had tried to have the ball joint greased like you said where they could stick a pin in the rubber, and they did just that but it only solved it for a day or two. I just hope they did more than that.
I know I said I probably wouldn't buy another dodge, but I've been looking and thinking over the past day or so and they have a 2005 Dodge Ram, Reg cab, short box with the hemi for 24,900 brand new on sale. After trade in and such I'd be looking at the total price to be around the 27,000 mark (because I still owed 12 on my dakota), and so the monthly payments for 6 years would be 450/month, which really isn't that bad. But we'll see.
Otherwise I'm still upset at the whole situation. and I'll update you guys with what happens!

Know how you feel hooby. This is the last Dakota I'll ever own again. Hell with the exception of a Viper GTS and pre 1975 mopars, I doubt I'll ever buy another DC product again (including any benz). Just sick of fighting with this truck. Ran fine until 60K miles and then just fell apart.
