General question on 4x4
I have been told by many (not on here) that my truck is an oddball because i have allwheel drive and not the standard 4wd. anybody else have awd and how odd is it? my truck is a 2001 quad cab, 4.7L automatic trans, no lsd just open diffs. Thanks for the input.
That was a factory option, so its not odd... maybe a little more uncommon, but certainly not odd.
If you're wondering what the difference is, 4 wheel drive locks the front and rear axles together so that at least 1 rear tire and at least 1 front tire are forced to travel at the same rate. In a turn, each tire takes a different path through the turn, so they each travel at a different rate. This can cause binding on pavement where the tires can't slip. All wheel drive has some form of differential between the front and rear axles so they are both driven but can travel at a different rate through a turn. Basically, all wheel drive is "street safe 4 wheel drive".
But even with all wheel drive, you should have a 4 lock option, right?

i do beleive it is a 70% rear 30% front ratio when in awd, and yes i have the choice of awd,4 high and 4 low. i have this truck for years and more and more poeple come up to me at car shows and tell me they have never seen awd in a dak. before. that is why i posted the question, just getting some input from the dak lovers who acually know.
wow, i would not have guessed that. it does not feel that way in the snow, but on dry roads that would explain alot. i tell you what, not being able to do a burner sure does save $ on tires, but it takes the fun out.
I hear that! I actually swapped in an NP242 into my truck last fall (AWD wasn't an option back in gen 1), which is the mechanically shifted predecessor to your electronic NP244. But the 242 I found actually has all 5 options! I have 2wd, 4hi, AWD, N, and 4lo. It kinda sucks though cause I won't be able to uses AWD on the street once my solid front axle swap is done, so I'll probably just switch it back to the 231, but AWD is a lot more fun in the snow than 4 wheel drive.
