what about oil leaks? any common 4.7L oil leaks? i looked at an 01 quad cab that was overall in great shape, only 112k miles, no rust anywhere, ran great, etc, but was wet from somewhere underneath the engine. i couldn't see where it was coming from, cuz i stopped by on my way home from work and i didn't want to get too cozy with the underside of a dirty truck while wearing nice clothes.

It could be a oil leak or power steering leak. All dodge trucks are notorious for there power steering pumps to take a dump. When you turn on the truck look for excessive whining when turning the steering wheel, if it whines only when you turn the steering wheel all the way then you are fine.

My 97 had the power steering pump leak. Thats the only leak I've had with either one of my Dakota's... May just be luck though.

looking at a different dakota tomorrow. he says he has a small PS leak (1-2 drops per day). he also said he already replaced the PS pump, and that it might be the rack. never been underneath a dakota before. worst case, if i have to end up changing it, how difficult is the rack to change? (i have not seen it yet, i'm not sure if this is the problem or not, i'm just going in prepared).

The uppers are pretty east. The lowers are more difficult. You need to take apart the whole lower control arm. Kinda sucks, but more time consuming then anything. If you don't have a press, most auto part stores will press them out for a couple bucks a piece if you bring them the control arm.
Actually, you dont need to take the lower control arm completly off, i never. Jack the truck underneath the frame also put a jack underneath the control arm and heat up the area around the ball joint perferable with a torch. ball pean hammer and a 5lb sledge and knock that sucker out. Pieace of cake as for putting a new back in, put the ball joint on a jack and jack it in and hit the control arm down with a maul. works great! I used a piece of 3" pipe cut to fit around the bj so the jack wouldn't hurt the surface area of it. just tap it down as you jack it up.

As for me, I own a 04 4.7 sport with lots of goodies! only problems i've ran into are Ball joints but i've ran 33x12.50 tires and cranked keys so I understand why. But besides that, these trucks are bulletproof
