Default Transmission issues 2nd gen

Hi,

I am having transmission issues on a 99 Dakota, 318 4x4 with an auto, I know what a surprise!!.

Here are the main details:

- stuck in second gear - wont' upshift to third (at all) and won't downshift to 1st except when I shift via the lever. Starts in second, stays in second.

- parking brake light on, even though the parking brake is released (confirmed, it's not stuck). Does not reset if I put the parking brake on and then release it.

- ABS light on

- Speedo doesn't register any speed

This started overnight. I went to start it up the other day to go to work and it had this issue. It didn't suddenly happen while driving.

We have had some tranny issues with the truck before, mainly the second-to-third shift. We had the truck parked for 6 months and it magically reset itself. The tranny mechanic thought that there was some valve (?) or solenoid (I'm working from... imperfect memory here) that got stuck in an open position, preventing the 2-3 shift, and the time sitting allowed it to loosen up and release. The mechanic did add an additive and serviced the tranny and it has been fine until yesterday. However, at that time we didn't have the parking brake light, ABS light and speedo issues.

Any ideas?

Do you have a Check Engine light? Sounds like your speed sensor is out. Or bad connection/wires.

Hi,

Just a quick update, it was the abs sensor on the rear axle. Apparently because my truck is a 4x4 the abs sensor is where it reads speed for the speedo and for the transmission. So new sensor in, the speedo works, the lights are out, and most importantly the damn truck shifts gears again.
