2001 Dakota Steering Rack
Hey All:
Wonder if anyone has some wrench time with this.
My 2001 Dakota (2WD - 4.7 SLT Quad Cab) started leaking pretty good from (what I would call) the pinion shaft coming out of the top of the rack. Went online, found a seal kit, and was planning on pulling the rack tonight. While I've not done one of these before (trucks I've built were fords, and quite a bit older), I'm an old gear head, so tripping through it doesn't worry me, but I wondered a couple of things:
Is this a serviceable part, or do I have to replace the whole rack ? When I called the dealer, they told me I had to buy a new steering rack for $800. I asked them if that came with lube (for my (a$$).
Assuming it is indeed servicable, once I pull the lines, tie rod ends, and the two frame bolts, does the pinion shaft come out of the rack, or do I have to break the column at the knuckle, and disassemble the rack from the other end, to GET to the shaft ? Might seem like stupid questions, but I am working from memory. I am at work, truck is home, and as I said, new territory for me.
Any pointers or resources would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim
