Cool power steering whine

My friend is about to buy his first dodge an 01 Dakota 4wd 4.7. it is pretty solid only small issues but one that stands out is the loud whine of the steering pump. the fluid inside looks like it is boiling after a short drive its possiable someone used ATF in it. Have any of you had this problem? if the pump needs to be replaced how long it take and how much? is there a way to flush the system?

Its prolly just a worn out pump. I do believe your supposed to use ATF in the 4.7 pumps. Not 100% sure tho.

per the Haynes manuel, mopar power steering fluid or atf+4 should be used.

Default power steering pump

I would go to autozone and buy a atsco power steering pump, I put on a reman cardone and had a lot of problems with it. easy to put in but pulley has to be pulled off. I just got a new pulley from dodge dealership for $20.00 was alot easier.

on my truck there was two different shaft sizes a 17mm or a 18mm.

Also there is a trick to the power steering pump when you put it in jack up the front of your truck and turn the wheel from stop to stop without the engine running.

It is the easies way to bleed all the air out. You have to do this because the return line returns from the bottom of the fluid reservoir.

that is what I had to do.

hope I helped out
