Default Power steering issue...

Reading a previous post made me think of a issue I have every now and then.. Some times if I go through a big puddle or seem to splash the under side of the truck my power steering will freeze up for a few seconds.. (even after I am out of the puddle so I know I'm not just in a water rut) Almost like something is shorting out? Ever happen to anybody or any suggestions?
trucks a 2004 4.7 4x4...
Thanks!!!

It happened in my old truck. It was from water getting up on the belt and the power steering pulley. It would squeal and I would lose power steering for a few seconds. Look to see if you have a splash guard missing or something. There is supposed to be a lower fan shroud that helps with keeping splashes out some. Otherwise, you're belt may need to be changed (you should do this anyways if it has been a while). If this still doesn't help, you could always look into adding a splash guard of your own and just fabricating up a piece of plastic or metal. Doesn't have to be pretty- just effective. It'll be on the underside and out of sight.

I think they make something called belt grab or dressing or something. You apply it to the pulley and it gets on the belt/s to help grip the pulley. be careful it could get the stuff on the under side of the hood or other engine dress-up addons.

The belt needs replacing if you find cracks sbout every 1/8 in (.125) all the way around the belt. Cracks spaced farther apart are OK, but they indicate that the belt is worn and will eventually need replaced. You should also check the tensioner to see if it is pushing against the belt. If it is easy to pull away for the belt, it's toast.

As far as the water problem, If the belt and tensioner are fine, I don't think you are hurting anything if this only happens a couple times a year. Fab up a guard if you are really concerned.
