Default '02 Dodge Dakota PCM Question

I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota and I was wondering if the Electronic Ignition Module was built into the PCM (Powertrain control module) or if it is a seperate unit?

Yes. I started my truck the other day and it just died after a couple seconds and showed a check engine light. I hooked up my reader and got a P0601 code. I took it to the dealer and they said I need a new PCM. So then I contact my Extended warranty and they said the PCM isnt covered. They only cover the Electronic Ignition Module which when I google, it seems like it doesn't have an ignition module, it seems like its just another name for a PCM.

CTM is the Central Timer Module. It controls the electrical and accessory functions like the headlights, wipers, radio, power windows and locks, dash lights, tail lights, keyless entry, etc. But it does not control the ignition system on the truck. In some other brands of trucks it is called a Body Control Module, but no matter what it is called, they both have the same functions.

PCM is the Powertrain Control Module. It is the engine and fuel management computer and it does control the ignition system, fuel delivery system, fuel management and ignition timing on the truck. It has a Federal Emissions Warranty of 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, and that might be the reason the extended warranty provider won't cover the PCM.

As far as I know, Dakota's do not have an Ignition Control Module. All they have is a CTM, PCM and a Transmission Control Module, which is part of the automatic transmission. I would call the extended warranty company back and ask for a manager or supervisor, or better yet a Technical Advisor to review the functions of the PCM and see if it could be covered, since that is the only Ignition Control device on the truck.

If you need a new PCM there is a company here in Florida that has a good reputation for good quality parts and good prices, I think another guy on here a while back got a new PCM for his truck for about $250.00 shipped. I may be wrong on the price but it was a lot better than a dealer price. Search here for posts containing PCM and Florida and you will probably find it. It was just a few months ago.
