Default Speedo Problems

I have a problem with my 99 Dakota 4wd 5.2: My speedometer only works after 25mph and up any thing under 25 it reads 0. The check engine lights is not on, but the ABS and brake lights are on.

Any ideas as to what to check first?

thanks in advance,

Larry

i am thinking that you have a bad speed sensor or abs wheel sensor. if you have 4 wheel abs, the front hubs hold the wheel sensors, then there is 2 more speed sensors. one in the rear diff and one on the trans(i think)

The vehicle has ABS on the rear only. I've ordered an new speed sensor for the rear differencial, and will post the results.

Mine is a 4x4 w/rear ABS. The sensor assembly mounts to the top to the rear differential pumpkin. If you have 4-wheel ABS, it might be a different setup.

Just a lil note, my 99 and 02 did the same thing, replaced sensor noticed metal shavings on sensor, so i changed out diff lube as well, good time to do it, cause the sensor gets magnetized and picks up shavings when magnet in rear housing gets accumulated with shavings, got to keep diff lube clean.
