2003 Dakota...Brakes???
I'm sure this question has been asked before. If so...I appologize for repeating it.
Has anyone else experience "extremely" squeeky brakes with their Dakota's? I have 20,000 miles on mine, and the brakes won't shut up! I had the dealership, and a local brake shop take a look at them. Both places said that the brakes and rotors are fine. A buddy of mine has a 2002 Dakota, and his brakes haven't made a sound yet. Mine have been squeeking for the last 10,000+ miles, and they're only getting worse[&o]
- Am I just unlucky, or is this common with Dakota's
- Is there an inexpensive aftermaket solution?
Any input would be greatly appreciated,
Mike

my 2003 club cab has always been squeaky... got just over 19k miles now. i don't notice it when the windows are up and/or the stereo is loud. just had the 18k service done and NYS safety inspection. apparently things are ok. BTW i have the 4w ABS option
sometimes the pads they use arent always the best, when a vendor offers a patr for less, the manufactuar buys it to save money,
if you wanna get rid of it, brake job, if not live with it

Chrysler brakes are garbage. Upgrade. Its just gonna get worse. I had so much trouble with the brakes on my 01. It started around 20,000 miles. Sticking calipers, warped rotors, burned up pads. Not worth replacing them with that same crap. Get some crossdrilled or slotted rotors and ceramic pads. 100% better for ya and will last longer.
Have the same problem on my '04 with 18K, the dealer told me the pads and rotors are glazed. They will squeak until they are replaced. He also said that they are no where near worn yet. We will have to see, right now it is embarassing to pull up to a light!!!
I've had two Dakotas in the last 4 years. I would swap those brakes out for aftermarket brakes in a hurry. The OEM ones up front are crap crap crap crap crap did I mention, CRAP???
I've had both a V6 and V8 Dakota, both of them gave me the same issue and honestly, it was due to sh**ty rotors. The brakes Chrysler puts on arent half bad, but the rotors are seriously horrible. For roughly $90-100, you can replace the rotors/pads at Autozone. It's not ceramics, but for a cheap fix in a hurry, it works. I forked out about $200 for ceramics and drilled rotors on my V8.
New brakes/rotors will also help cut down on all the brake dust on your front wheels. It wont get rid of it, but you should see a difference in the amount of it pretty quickly.
Edit:
Most places will pass the brakes/rotors if they look okay. That doesnt mean they are good. It just means it passed a visual inspection and that they work. I do not trust OEM brakes/rotors and most of the MOPAR people I know are big advocates of aftermarkets.
