Default 1997 Dakota SLT Sound System..Need New Stuff

I'm not typically a "MODS" kind of guy. I work on 5, 10 + cars a day and the last thing I want to do is..well...you know.

What I need is some advice on what AND where to get speaker replacements/adapters instead of putting the crappy factory speakers back in. BTW they're all busted and buzzing.

I plan on keeping my factory (5 yo) head unit at the moment as it's working fine unless there is some "package" deal I can't resist. I don't need an amp really because a Dakota interior is not that big..lol

Some links and suggestions would be very helpful, TY

I would probably go up to 3 or 400. Thanks for the tip. Do your speakers have adapters or did they just fit right in?

i just cut off the stock connector and connected the wires to the 2 tabs on the speaker, it was a pretty ghetto install in terms of wiring but it works. for 300 bucks you might as well get a head unit. mine was 120 bucks and its got a built in amp/sound processer thing that makes it sound much better. its the jvc ks 100.

i put 6.25's in mine. no adaptors needed if the depth of the speaker clears the window stuff inside the door. i put 3way kenwood coaxials in the front and critical mass 2ways in the rear. i should have went 2ways on the front cause of the infinity tweets, way to much tweet action.

The best way to buy speakers is to listen to the different brands and get the ones that sound best to you that are within your budget. Personally I like Alpine and JL Audio but there are a lot of good speakers out there. Some say the Infinity Reference speakers work best with the factory Dodge audio system. It really is all just personal preference and getting what sounds best to you. Best Buy and even Walmart, as well as any good independent car audio store will all have displays where you can audition different speakers. You need 6 1/2" speakers, front and rear for your Dakota.

You can remove the factory speaker from its mounting bracket and use it to install the new speakers, or some brands even come with plastic mounting adaptors. I don't like either of those methods, I used my factory speaker as a template and made my own mounting plates out of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), 3/4" for the front, 1/2" for the rear.

You can buy a 2 foot by 3 foot section of MDF at Home Depot for about 5 bucks. Look in the shelving area in the lumber dept. It won't rattle or resonate and is a lot more solid method of mounting the new speakers.

You can also buy speaker wire harness adaptors that allow you to install the new speakers without having to guess at the wiring polarity.

go through crutchfield, they have good deals like said above. and you put in your year and model and they will show you what will fit without modifcations. i run kenwood excelon all the way around my truck, head unit door speakers amps and subs. i am a kenwood excelon fanatic

Best Buy has some good deals on there car stereo equipment, and they do installs as well if you dont want to mess with having to do it yourself. Also, look for a local car audio shop, if they are hurting for business the least little bit they do some pretty killer package deals as well.

I'm about to replace the factory speakers in my '02 Club Cab & keep the stock head unit- no infinity in my truck.

I have a pair of 6.5" speakers I bought over 8 years ago, still new in box. I bought another pair just last week from Crutchfield- they are *very* good people to deal with. When you buy a pair of speakers from them they include free a pair of adapter plates and a pair of speaker plug pigtail adapters. I think they have free shipping through tomorrow, Sept. 15. They may also still offer a Dynamat kit(2 10" squares of the stuff) for $5 with speaker purchase instead of $20-something. Look for high sensitivity ratings, like 92-93 db, if you're gonna drive 'em with a stock non-Infinity stereo.

So I'd say, check out Crutchfield.com .

I have a speaker question. I called C-Field (actually i called them 2 or 3 times, when I did my headunit) and they said all 6 speakers are 2 ohms. So if you replace them wwith std 4 ohms, you'd get less power output right? I find it hard to believe they're 2 ohms...
