Default problem at 1900 rpm

i have a 01 dakota, 2wd, 5spd, an the awesome 2.5L and 262,xxx miles. It recently started to skip really bad at the 1800-1900 rpm. It will only do it in this range and it doesnt matter what gear. Usually it's after it gets warmed up but sometimes it can be as soon as the first trip. When it does this the gas mileage jumps off a cliff. It seems like it drops at least 2 cylinders. I've felt it have a miss fire before but when it does this it's like head banging. I've changed the plugs and i thought it fixed it but was mistaken. Don't know what else to do or check but if anyone has any ideas i greatly apperciate it.
