Default Low and High transmission band adjustment

Stupid question but here goes.

The destructions said to tighten the locknut to 30 ft/lbs. I do not have an open-end torque wrench which will allow me to hold the adjustment screw while tightening the locknut to said torque.

Anybody have any ideals on how to do this or just use a good a guesstament.

thanks in advance

What year, engine and transmission.

the manual for my 98 says to torque the adj. screw.Back x no. of turns and tighten the locknut.

You have to torque the adjustment band screw, and when ready to tighten the locknut, hold the adjustment screw and tighten the lock nut. To get a torque value on the lock nut, you will need a crows foot wrench. It will have the 1/2"drive openimg on one end and the correct size open end wrench on the other.

Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking that the crows foot wrench was the way to go, but wasn't sure.

But, I am not going to adjust the bands. I can't get my hands on a inch pound
torque wrench that will give me the 72 in.lbs. (6 ft.lbs) that I need to set the adjustment
screw to.

To answer your question '97 3.9 42RE 4x4

I did change the fluid and filter. It took 1 bottle of Lucas trans fix and 4 and 3/4
quarts of trans fluid.

There was NOT a lot of metal in the pan. BUT the magnet was covered in
a lot of slug looking stuff. Don't know for sure but I think the stuff was
the band material.

If the thing will last till tax return time may get it rebuilt of just get rid of the POS.
