Default 2002 Dakota - No reverse torque

Have a 2002 Dakota V6, 3.9L 2WD, 77,186 miles. Out of nowhere I have very little torque in reverse gear. Truck seems to drive normally in forward gears. While backing up I have some reverse but not much at all. I've also heard a spinning sound while backing up, and once for a short time in drive...not really a grinding sound but more like something spinning in there. Haven't driven the truck for a few days while trying to sorta diagnose the problem hoping I don't ripped off.

Some more info: Manually shifting, the gear shift has some trouble manually shifting into 1st or low gear. I can feel it drop into reverse and with some work, I can get the truck into 1st or low gear and it does pull forward fine and takes gas.

Once the problem started, I drove the truck once to test it again. Backing out of the driveway, low reverse torque but made it out. Truck shifted gears normally up to 35mph and then heard that spinning sound again for a few seconds and brought the truck to a stop and drove it home. It made it home without another noise and has been sitting for a couple days.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated as I don't have tons of cash to shell out for a new tranny or rebuild.

Thanks,

Tom W.

Im not sure what would cause this but these transmissions are notorious for bad solenoids. If it were me id change the fluid and filter, adjust the two bands, and replace the solenoids. And just to give you a little info on what ive went through with my dakota same year engine and tranny, it stopped shifting into first and so I changed the fluid and filter, which helped for awhile. after that wore off and it got worse i changed the fluid again and this time the solenoids, ok that helped alittle but it still wouldnt accelerate and it was starting to overheat and trip the O/D OFF light. So I changed fluid and filter and adjusted the bans, still continued so I had to do a rebuild. I wasted about 150 dollars in fluid and filters. When all was said and done I spent about 2k.

My advice is if you plan to keep the truck for another 5 years or more start planning to rebuild or replace the tranny and TC now.

I'm not a big transmission expert but like he said it could be the solenoid.Hows the fluid look.

Fluid looks OK. It does have some torque so I just can't see how the tranny is shot...it drives forward so I'm gonna take it in to get the filter and fluid changed and start there.

How does the fluid not only look (color) but also how does it smell and feel. To really tell the difference take a sniff of clean new fluid. if the old stuff smells burnt you may have a problem. The feel can also tell you something rub it between your fingers is it nice and slippery or does it feel like water.

Now that I think of it before I had my trans rebuilt I had very little torque in reverse. I parked down a drive way nose down and almost didn't get back out and there was no place to turn around I had to gun the engine just to get it to move.

I guarantee that a fluid and filter change is not going to fix your problem. It may make it seem better at first but the syptoms will return and continue to get worse until you fix the problem. The problem could be several things like the TC, the valve body, etc. The only way to know for sure is to take it to a transmission shop and let them diagnose the tranny.
