not always my check engine light isnt on but i still has an o2 sensor code on it , what you can do is turn the key to the on position do not start the truck then turn it off , and turn it on again and off once again not starting then turn on for the 3rd time and leave it on and it will show whatever codes there are in the odometer window and it will say pdone when finished. now if he disconnected the battery it will clear the codes and it wil take the truck the about 5 cycles to bring the codes back up if there is a problem.
You can see what the codes are here https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...ine-light.html They are located at the top of the forum in the diy sticky incase you need to find them again.
