Been researching this for a few days trying to figure out what to buy. I have both fans- mechanical and electric. So I took 15 minutes and took the mechanical fan out!

Awesome modification thus far. Gave me some of that low end pull I was looking for. Not GOBS of power but definitely noticeable.

So, why don't people simply hook up a controller to the stock Efan, instead of buying another efan??

My auto parts store Schucks/Oreilly rents tools for free as long as you leave a depost. Having the proper tools made this a no brainer!!
The stock efan doesn't pull air quite like a purposefull fan.

I went the long route and put a Lincoln fan on mine. I took pictures when I rebuilt my truck so you can get an idea of how well it fits.

You could put a controller to the stock fan to make it turn on at 190 instead of 210, if you have a 180 stat. If you have the 195 factory stat, then 210 (default) is probably the best you'll squeeze out of it effectively.

The Mk8 fan is only $55 at the junkyard, has 100 amp startup and a 50 or 60 amp run. I forget what I fused it at. It uses 10 gauge wire, same as stock fan, so you could probably splice it in, but I don't know if the inrush current would kill the stock relay terminals or not. I used a 70 amp high power relay, some have used ford starter solenoids.

Since this thread came back from the dead...

I have both fans too. What's the point of removing the mechanical clutch fan?

Less drag on the engine, better throttle response and maybe a gain in a mpg or 2

I removed my clutch fan when I replaced my water pump and love how much quieter it is at take off. I'll admit I've been bitten by the "I think I have more power" bug...I'm sure it's in my head but it feels good. Plus I think it has to be better for the water pump...The fan is heavy and has to put a strain on the water pump shaft???

When summer hits and the E-Fan is working too hard I can just slip the mechanical fan back on.

It'll never happen. (Unless you're towing in the middle of rush hour through death valley)

the noise reduction alone makes it worth it... Pretty sure I can get away with a controller on the stock efan as well

We'll see come summer.. there's no doubt that throttle response has improved, especially "down low"..

if you want it to kick on all you need to do is turn your a/c on. instant controller.

I removed my clutch fan some time ago and noticed the wire to the fan was severed prolly from a lil fender bender, but hooked up wires right and tested fan w/ 12v power and it worked fine let it sit for quite sometime idling in summer heat, temp went up to 1/2 way (idiot gauge) didnt get any hotter, and fan didnt kick on dont even know if it works, but haven't had any problems, just outta curiosity any way to check relay or fan controller??
