BG transmission service
My mechanic is suggesting a BG transmission service for my '04 Dakota with 4.7 engine and 5 spd automatic.
I think the sequence goes something like this:
1) BG cleaner is circulated thru transmission
2) Tranny is flushed out
3) Pan is dropped, filter changed
4) Tranny is refilled with ATF-4 and BG additive
The mechanic says BG then gives you a 100,000 mile warranty on the transmission.
This is fairly expensive, at $179. Anyone out there know anything about this BG stuff? I have heard they have good products, but I'm a little goosey about adding strange new things to my transmission.

There is a place around me that offers something like that...and as many fluid changes as you want for life(which for most people is far under 100K). Me, I have a manual trans, so I dont know what I would do. But, If it takes you through the end of your ownership of the truck warranty-wise, $180 isnt a bad deal...esp if you're not confident enough to do the work yourself. (nothing wrong with that).
BG is a good service, they will use a machine to flush out the old transmission fluid and pump in the new fluid. The good thing about BG is it replaces all the fluid in the transmission. A regular drop the pan and drain type service still leaves a lot of old burned fluid in the torque convertor and transmission cooler. Depending on the mileage on your truck and whether the fluid has ever been flushed, it might be a good idea to have it done, especially if you do any towing and/or heavy hauling.
I don't know anything about the BG 100K mile guarantee. BG does have some "protection plans" in place but the way I understand it is they only cover certain components based on when you had the original BG service done. You might look online or Google BG and get a phone number to call and verify the 100K guarantee. You can also check out www.bgfindashop.com. You might want to check with other local transmission shops, see if they have a similar power flush service for less money. The trick is finding a shop that uses a flush machine to drain and refill the entire transmission. $179.00 seems a bit steep to me, even for a BG service.
