Default Whirring sound from trans when cold

I will try to be as accurate as possible with my description without sounding like a complete idiot, which is common anyways...

I have noticed lately that my transmission makes a loud whirring-type noise in the morning. It only happens when the truck is cold and hasn't been driven for hours, and happens once then doesnt happen again.

For example: This morning I start the truck, back out of my driveway, put it in Drive, and start moving. It makes a loud whirring sound until it upshifts to 2nd gear. I stop a quarter of a mile ahead at the light, start going again, and it doesnt do it. It ONLY makes the noise when the truck is cold, and once it gets through 1st gear that first time, it won't make the noise again.

Truck is a 2004 QC w/ the 3.7 and 43k miles.

Any ideas on what is going on here?

Sounds like the fan or clutch of the trans.. That is pretty common for most vehicles that are cold and have not warmed up.. thats why your supposed to warm your vehicle up.. not only does it get everything to 'working temp' for your system to fully engage, but also allows the oil's and such time to warm up and lubricate properly..

Letting your engine warm up is the difference from a long life engine/trans or not and zapping the life out it..

At least thats what I was always told/live by my paw.. he stood by warming up first.. at least above the 130 mark at least.. or untill the engine on its own with out reeving RPM decreased.. he said it was warm enough then. because the sensors start kicking in disengaging the cold idle thing..
