Default engine knocking and smoking

Hello,
Any ideas what caused this? knocks hard/loud and smokes. 2001 Dakota Quad Sport:

4.7L engine, would it be worth rebuilding or just replacing the motor with a already rebuilt?

I just bought this truck, I knew it had this problem, but I got it for a great price even if I have to put a new engine in it for $2000ish because I only paid $500 and it's mint!

Thanks,
Jason

My guess would be no oil.... So put a new motor in it.

Tear it apart and see if its worth rebuilding we cant tell you over the interweb.

If a new engine is with in your budget and time, for for it.
As said above, a tear down may show the engine is worth saving.

Default Where should I buy

Where do people recommend buying Crate, rebuilt, or used engines?

Is Ebay Motors reliable or full of scammers?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. BTW, If I wanted to, could I put in the 5.4?
