HID's on a Canadian Dakota
I'd love to fit a set of HID lights on my Dakota but I need to know if they will work on mine.
The problem I see is that it has a form of daytime running lights. As soon as the ignition is on the Head lights come on. Its Main beam but running at a reduced voltage. That's with the light switch in the Off position (fully turned to the left). When turned to the next position the Side/City lights come on, front and rear (reduced Main beam still on). Only when turned to fully to the right does it behave like a standard set up. The Head light comes on with Dipped beam and Main beam controlled with the stalk.
I think I need to disable the Daytime lights so that it just has the normal Off, Side and Dipped/Main Beam settings.
Does anyone know this is all dictated by the wiring loom being different or is it all down to the program on the PCM, and if its the latter can it be reflashed to a US lighting set up? Alternatively, if the "Dim" Main beam voltage is low enough, would the HID's simply not come on? This would actually be a better solution (if it didn't cause any damage to them), as they would only come on when switched to the conventional position and be off when just the Side lights are wanted.

One thing you never want to do is run hid's on a drl vehicle it will kill the ballast very quickly. Other thing is i've heard that in canada you have to have drl's so check your laws before you disable them. Other way is just remember to turn on your lights everytime you get into your truck. Most hid's will accept a low voltage to run(I think my kit is a 10-14v ballast) but the start up demand is high. Most of the time drl's will only cause one light to come on.
i had hids and they wouldnt even ignite if you have the drl module plugged in. and here in ontario law states u need drl's but the cops arent that bugged about it. just like all the other dumbass laws
Thanks for all the info. I think I shall give unplugging the DRL module a try. I spoke to a dealer yesterday and they confirmed by the VIN that it had the DRL module but the service guy said it was also linked to PCM as to whether the DRL's worked or not, he also tried to convince me that I had Auto lighting because his '06 GMC had it, in other words he knew less than me!
Although its a Canadian spec truck, its actually over here in the UK! They've only just made it law for all NEW cars to have DRL's but its not compulsory to have them on anything made before April '11.
