Default checking tranny fluid

what exactly is the process of checking the tranny fluid level on a 45rfe (4.7 auto)? i know there are a few different marks like the cold level on the dipstick but is cold completely cold or what? does the engine and tranny have to be at operating temp? and you check it with the trans it neutral right? i am pretty confused on this haha any help is appreciated thanks!

just do it when the trans is warm. as long as its not black, its good. redish/pink to orange you are still safe. I had my fluid dark orange (getting old) for a while and i changed it recently and its all good.

engine warm check it after 15min of cooling down. it should be between the 2 dimples. if engine is hot level should be in the crosshatched area near the max line.
