Default dakota power loss

I have a '97 dakota 2wd, auto w/ 3.9l engine. Having problems where when at highway speed i will sometimes loose power. If I tap the gas, the engine will pop or backfire but I will just keep slowing down. Sometimes revving the engine in neutral will clear it up.
This only happens sporadically and sometimes within the first 10 miles or I can go hundreds of miles before it happens or it may not happen. The check engine light came on once the first time it happened (6 weeks ago), mech told me O2 sensor so I replaced it, no change. Fuel pump/filter? Ignition module? Don't want to just start throwing money at it. Any help would be great!!! Thanks!
